(Sunday, October 11th, 2009--Madison, Wisconsin) As Ian co-pilots the eastbound business jet over Western Illinois, Bill lies with Christina, far to the north in a Wisconsin hotel. It is clear that Bill loves two women, in two very different ways, and that he has compartmentalized his two distinct worlds. There is but one small conduit through which ideas flow between the two compartments, and it is God. To Bill’s mind Christina is undeniably a lifesaver, and one that has been tossed into his churning and violent sea not by a human hand, but by none other than God himself. (17 years earlier) Scared by a movie about evil and hostile spirits, Ian and Samantha contemplate the existence of such ghosts. The following morning, Ian is moved powerfully at church as he basks in spiritual time and lets flow his appreciation for his many blessings. Among them is his belief that his mother will - if not be saved - be gloriously reunited with his father. After church, the family discusses the expensive treatment option in Mexico. Matt successfully articulates the folly of it, but only after experiencing the anguish of walking the fine line between dashing his mother’s hopes and the truth. In the end, Janet Keppler passes away peacefully in her home, surrounded by the pure light of love from her boys. Where an earthly door had closed, Ian takes solace in believing that a perfect, heavenly gate has just opened to welcome his mother.
